Blocking in: To start off I created the rectangular shape I decided on for the logo and filled it with a colored background. I knew I wanted a “z” in the bottom. To add it I simply selected the type tool and used a font I thought was fitting.
Adding photos: I added some corals on the bottom from photos I found. I usually select parts of a photo by using the quick selection. This tool selects what is NOT in red. To use it then I paint red the area I want and then inverse the selection. At the second step I am also playing around with painting the rock silhouette of the letter.
Adding the ship: I wasn’t sure if I wanted a building or a ship on top. I played with some designs on another Photoshop file and once I was set on a design I transferred it into this file on a separate layer.
Adding colors: In this stage I am just adding colors to the ship.
Adding textures and photos: I collected photos from CGtextures and using the quick selection tool I added windows, cloth textures, barnacles for the stilts, etc. During the entire process I am overlaying textures in order to give the painting more “flavor.”
More warmth and light on top: Using a gradient and painting warmer versions of the colors to give the illusion of light. Also using the lasso tool I created some areas I paint into and then create the rays of light going underwater.

Wow! Love this!
